About set up charges for Promotional Products and Awards

Set up charges cover the cost of preparing a logo, artwork or text for a promotional product or award. Engraving, debossing and foil stamping all require some form of die, pattern for the engraver to place the artwork on the item.

For engraving on crystal or glassware, a stencil is created with cutouts for the portion of the layout that will be sandblasted.

For deboss on leather items, a magnesium die is created to allow the creation of a depression for the text or logo. The die is used under pressure to depress the leather thereby showing the text or logo. By the way, deboss is depressed into the leather and emboss is the raising of the text or logo on the leather.

For the foil stamping process a die is created and applied using a color film under heat and pressure.

For plates, the text and logo are placed in a machine and the information is laser engraved on the metal plate.

In all cases, the logo or artwork must be in line art format rather than pixel based. See Mary’s article on artwork for more information.

There are many variations depending on the equipment your supplier uses, but all need the right artwork and a similar set up process.

If you change the size of the logo or artwork, most companies will charge you for a new set up since a completely new stencil or die must be created.

Nearly all promotional products and awards suppliers charge a set up fee that ranges from $45 to $200 per order. Most suppliers charge for a repeat set up as well. Our crystal promotional supplier and our marble supplier have waived the set up charge.
